BIOGRAPHY
The names of Edward Frey's parents is found in his marriage record. At
FamilySearch.org, his place of birth is given as Neugardein, Pilsen, Boehmen
Koenigreich, Austria. Neugardein is probably Neugarten. Pilsen is German for
Plzen, which is today in Czechoslovakia, and is where they first brewed
Pilsner, a lager beer.
There is an 1870 census for a Kattie Frey, age 50, and her children,
Julia Frey age 18, Mary Frey age 16, Edward Frey age
14; Antonia Frey age 11, Joseph Frey age 7, and Mary Frey
age 5, all born in Germany. Neither Kattie nor her children are working.
Although none of these people could be traced through later census records,
it is believed this is the family of our Edward Frey.
Edward Frey, Jr. married Wilhelmina
Stritzky on May 15, 1879, and they had four children:
Anna Frey b. Oct 1879,
Catherine Frey, called
Kate, b. 20 Dec 1882, Mollie Frey b. Feb 1884, and Frank Frey
b. Apr 1885. At the time of his naturalization in 1892, Edward Frey, Jr. was a
locksmith, living at 699 East 167th Street in the Bronx. Eight years later
he was living a block away at 700 166th Street.
Edward's daughter Anna Frey married Ernest Ahlburg
in 1904 or 1905.
In 1910
Edward Frey and wife "Minnie" were living in the same house with Anna and Ernest Ahlburg. Edward Frey was
now employed as a saloon keeper, and in 1920 he was retired.
It appears his son-in-law Ernest Ahlburg
took over the business, as in the
same year Ernest Ahlberg was "manager" of a saloon. As neither Edward nor
Wilhelmina were found in the 1930 census it is assumed they had passed away.
Edward Frey invested extensively in real estate and transferred much of this
property to his daughters Anna and Katherine.
