BIOGRAPHY
Although Fred Kappes claimed he was born in Pennsylvania the family must have returned not long after his birth, as no records are found for him until he arrived in Oregon as a ship carpenter aboard the Harold. Fred was engaged in Hamburg on November 10, 1921. The ship stopped in Chingwangtao, China and arrived first in Astoria, Oregon on October 15th, 1922. The ship then arrived at Portland on October 17, and Fred deserted November 21st. The last page of the manifest contains information on his claim for citizenship in the US. He speaks both English and German and claims he is a citizen of the U.S.A. His last residence is Hamburg, Germany, and his closest relative is his father Johannes Kappes, Neumunster, Germany. His final destination is (can't read city) Oregon. Part of the page is missing on the edge but we can read most of it.

Referred to Dept. for ruling as to citizenship

In 1930 Fred was married to Dorthy H. and they had one son Raymond V., age 2 years and 4 months. Dorthy may have died as we know he married Hildur Beck as her third husband.
