BIOGRAPHY
In Norway the last name of a person was the "farm name." I believe John H. Wiig took his surname from a farm he lived on before he married and removed to Kragerø, where he was a "tailor." As Bergens Stift, where John was born, covers a very large area, and, as there are many, many farms with "vik" in their names, it may be impossible to find John's place of birth and parents. John's middle name was probably Henri or Harold, as these names were carried down to his son and grandson.

The only information found thus far John Wiig and his wife Sønneva are contained in the 1865 census and the immigration record. John was born in Bergens Stift, a province that was later broken up into modern Hordaland, Sogn og Fjordane, Sunnmøre and Romsdal. Sønneva was born in Kragerø, a sea-side region southwest of Oslo, which is today a resort area. The artist Edvard Munch came from Kragerø.

John H. Wiig accompanied his daughters Henriette and Constance to America in 1888, but it does not appear that he remained in America. Most likely he settled Henrietta and Constance, perhaps visited with relatives who had immigrated previously, and then returned home to Sønneva and his other children. John's son Henry Wick immigrated a year later in 1889, and two other people named Wig immigrated from Kragerø within the next few years: Engle Wig, age 16, in 1891, and Anna Wig, age 20, in 1898 . These may also be their children as John and Sønneva are the only people living in Kragere in 1865 with the surname Wiig or Wig. Also, the names Anna, Saneva, and Jean appear among John's grand-daughters.

John's daughter Constance Wiig married Jens Jensen in 1890, and they lived in the Bronx, where Jens was a pipe fitter in 1900. By 1910 he was a foreman in the Ship Yard, and in 1920 a machinist. Jens and Constance had four children: Sylvia Jensen, Bergilot Jensen [Bergliot Jensen], Waldorf Jensen, and James Roy Jensen. Constance died before the 1920 census as Jens was a widow at that time. Waldorf married Blanche___ and they had a daughter Marjorie Jensen. Waldorf and Blanche moved to Miami before 1930 where he was a real estate broker.

John and Sønneva may have also had a daughter Hildur Marie Beck as this was May Greenwold's cousin, although we're unsure if they were first or second cousins.
